for those of you who might think i never have a bad cooking day, i need to confess that after trying to make my own organic yogurt (looking for a cheaper way to get that yogurt fix for taido, who consumes a $4 quart of yogurt every few days), all i have is a puddle of yogurt smelling milk. it is not “setting” as the recipe from french women don’t get fat says it should. i am despondent! but i am no quitter…must figure out what went wrong?? any suggestions? and what to do with my yogurt puddle? smoothies for lunch, anyone??

foods i can’t stop making
trader joe's rice sticks with ina garten's peanut sauce: add skillet fried tofu, sprouts and cilantro
easy pasta: homemade pasta from the argenta market in all different varieties need very little dressing up to be so yummy!
roasted vegetables:eggplant, squash, zucchini, potatoes, okra, garlic, leeks...whatever looks good at the farmers' market, drizzled with olive oil, roasted for 20 minutes at 425 degrees F. tossed with pasta, tossed with feta, tossed with lemon juice or alongside grilled fish...i am obsessed with summer vegetables! the only thing that would make them better is if they were coming from our garden!! not yet though.
salad: it is HOT here. salad every day!
anything with fresh basil: caprese salad or pesto or margherita pizza...so many foods are made better with basil
berry desserts: blueberry bars raspberry breakfast bars berry pie

My mom is a fab yogurt maker. She has some sort of machine. Shall I send her over with it when she is here on Tuesday? She could give you a demo. Miles is a yogurt addict as well… Me? I can’t stand the stuff! Isn’t that awful?

alison — so great to hear from you! i’ve really enjoyed reading about you, your kids, and taido, and i’m very glad to hear you’re all doing well. this is a really great blog you’ve got here, it reminds me of some of my favorite writers, but it’s no wonder since i remember you being a pretty prolific reader =). as i’ve gotten older, i’ve realized what a tremendous example you and taido were to the basic/ttic crew — you folks lived faithfully and humbly, and i’ve definitely grown in my appreciation for y’all. anyway, let the chino clan know i said hello!
