i’ve been avoiding my blog. it is kind of strange how it takes on its own personality after a while, something i created but now cannot control, nagging me to get back to it…”post! post! c’mon! post!” anyway, i have been writing, just not on my blog, because i can only take so much abuse, you know. ok, abuse is strong…mocking is more accurate. anyway, i have been really sad/mad about some things lately and so i’ve been using some other outlets for my ranting. i keep editing and rewriting and reading and thinking but my feelings and opinions about a school district, an art teacher, a man who is delusional about what counts as normal relating patterns, racial barriers and grossly spoiled white, middle-class children (mine included) are just not ready for general consumption. and since my brain and heart in its current condition might not be ready any time soon for this venue, i am attempting (though not nearly as well…in other words, minus pictures and cool set details) to do a movie list like jerusalem, who ps, is one of my favorite and amazingly consistent bloggers. whitney and i have been talking about movie lists and we watched dreamgirls together last night, while taido sat in the same room with us, working on his computer and smirking. he was somewhat restrained…that man can flat ruin a movie experience with his sarcasm…but at one point he did say, “i’m sorry, did someone win an award for a performance in this movie?” he kills me. anyway, it was a movie night and i love to watch a good movie. i don’t get to do it as much as i used to, mainly because i usually am asleep by the time i used to be starting up a movie. but i have had some very good movie days. here are some of my favorites.
movies i watched over and over again as a child, memorized the lines to and performed sequences with my sister over and over and over:
movies i watch over and over again now:
pride and prejudice (the BBC version, the one that is six hours long)
movies i enjoy watching over and over with my kids (i can NOT sit through a lot of the total crap that is made for children these days):
prince of egypt (i cry every time we watch this, um, actually that is true for most of the movies in this category)
the chronicles of narnia: the lion, the witch and the wardrobe
little miss marker (i still love it!)
pirates of the caribbean (the first one)
movies that changed my life:
Alison, these are some good looking lists. I am pleased to discover that, like myself, you were a diehard Hayley Mills fan too! And please call me next time you’re in the mood for a marathon of some old school Pride and Prej. I’m so there.
p.s. I like your blog.
I love the list! So many of our movies are the same. Parent Trap was my ab fab favorite movies of all time as a kid. I just loved it, and really still do. I also agree that there is so much that I am ranting about right now in my head that I feel logged jammed when it comes to blogging. I mean, people are used to coming to my blog for pretty pictures, do they really want me to rail on about what I think about the state of the church in America? Or parenting trends? No, I think not. Sigh… I sometimes feel like I need to start a new “rant” blog under a phony name…hehe.
well, I’ve heard that alison has eleven secret ones, so why not?
as I read your list, and this is where the abuse comes in I guess, all I could think was “poor Taido” I did not see Casino Royale on your list. Nor did I see We Were Soldiers or Amistad or Gladiator or Caddyshack or Ghostbusters or Raising Arizona or … well, I’ll stop with The Big Lebowski
First, am I the only one who thinks that picture of Brian and Will is great?
And secondly I love you Alison and your passion for things, I will work on the comments on compost piles- really I’m just jealous of your dedication.
yes the picture of bryan and will is so great…perfect really.
of course i am kidding about being mocked…peter is the only one who mocks me to my face…
and oh my gosh! i HATED casino royale…blecchhhhhhhh!
and bryan, taido gets back with his biting sarcasm during practically all movie viewing…PLEASE do NOT pity him…
sb, i’m up to like 14 now…
hello alison!
I have thoroughly ENJOYED catching up on your blog, today. I really should be working on LTC stuff–yup it’s that time again! (but it’s the last LTC…probably ever!);)…
Anyways, I’m choosing to post my comment here b/c I just saw the movie “once.” And I LOVED it! It’s still in the theatres here in LA (at the smaller artsy/foreign film theatres). Anyways, if you have a chance to see that one, go see it! Not too much diagloue, but tons of music and real life. (rated R for language).
Also, I just finished reading “The Bookseller from Kabul” that you gave me last year..and I really enjoyed reading it…so thought I’d let ya know. Any more book recommendations? ok..this is a very long post. take care..and keep blogging
…miss and love you all!…
“the philadelphia story” is probably the best cary grant/katharine hepburn movie ever — and jimmy stewart was the icing on the cake!
