This picture stopped me in my tracks. I thought it was worth seeing, so I swiped it off my friend, David’s blog. Thoughts?
Mary Polly said she remembers this exact scene being described in the book, Bud, Not Buddy.
I’ve been thnking a lot about our “standard of living” lately. Especially since listening to This American Life’s episode on the banking crisis that explains to normal people like me what in the heck is going on with our banks. It is well worth the listen for this explanation, but also for the poignant reminder that the banks have just given us what we’ve wanted…the American Way baby…

That photo says a lot, as photos tend to do. Oh, the irony.
I’ve been thinking a lot about “the American Way” lately as I read Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood,” about a well-loved Kansas family that seems to have everything yet their wealth and popularity are no defense against two murderers who invade their home in the middle of the night. In fact, their wealth is what made them targets.
Also, as a budget coach who counsels people against excess and and reminds them who is the ultimate Provider, it has been quite interesting to listen to the news lately — to all the talking heads, the white-collar criminals and the bloated executives who don’t seem to have a clue what our real problem is — our rejection of the true Source of peace and contentment.

Really good example of the invisible truth being made visible.

We listened to that podcast on our trip down. I think the scariest part is when they talked about how our national accumulation of debt is equal to our savings and that’s the problem. Why can’t we end the credit crunch by NOT USING CREDIT anymore? I know it’s scary to only buy what we have the money for–but could that be a solution (I’m saying this on a credit financed trip to Florida–haha)?
